Neurodivergent- Informed Care

Neurodivergence often brings unique strengths and perspectives, but it can also intersect with ment

Many neurodivergent people experience heightened anxiety, difficulties with emotional regulation, or periods of burnout. Sensory sensitivities, social overwhelm, and the ongoing effort of masking or adapting to environments not built with neurodivergence in mind can contribute to stress, exhaustion, or feelings of disconnection. Over time, these experiences may increase vulnerability to depression, self-doubt, or a sense of isolation—even when neurodivergence itself is not the problem, but rather the barriers and expectations of the world around us.

Autism and Mental Health

  • Increased risk of anxiety and depression due to masking, sensory overload, and social stress
  • Autistic burnout, which may appear as exhaustion, withdrawal, shutdowns, or loss of skills
  • Struggles with self-esteem and identity when needs are misunderstood or minimized.
  • Greater vulnerability to suicidality in the absence of adequate support and acceptance

ADHD and Mental health

  • Higher likelihood of anxiety and depression linked to executive functioning challenges and chronic feelings of being “behind”
  • Emotional dysregulation and rejection sensitivity, which can heighten stress and conflict in relationships
  • Burnout from the constant effort of meeting demands in environments not designed with ADHD in mind
  • Increased risk of impulsive coping strategies, including substance use, when overwhelmed

Intersections of Neurodivergence and Mental Health

  • Autistic burnout overlapping with depression and chronic fatigue
  • ADHD-related emotional dysregulation compounding with anxiety disorders
  • Sensory overwhelm contributing to panic, shutdowns, or avoidance
  • The impacts of masking fueling exhaustion, identity confusion, and depressive symptoms
  • Heightened risk of suicidality across autistic and ADHD populations, often linked to lack of support or systemic barriers
